Fred was one of the pioneers of Corneal transplant surgery in NSW, and involved with the establishment of the Lions NSW eye bank. He was a Senior Specialist at Sydney Eye Hospital managing corneal and anterior segment disorders for close to 40 years, and remains an honorary Visiting Medical Officer. He has performed thousands of surgical procedures over his career.

He has had a hand in training a generation of Ophthalmologists, as well as overseas Fellows, and was previously an examiner for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists.

He founded Burwood eye clinic in the 1970s, and has recently stopped taking routine appointments.
